Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is developing an innovative transportation solution called RailBus to enhance connectivity within the emirate. Unveiled at the World Governments Summit (WGS) 2025, RailBus is designed as a first- and last-mile solution, connecting internal areas of densely populated communities to the Dubai Metro and Dubai Tram networks. A senior RTA official, Malek Ramadan Mishmish, explained that RailBus will have multiple stations or hubs strategically located within these communities, serving areas currently not directly accessible by the existing rail systems.
Specifically, RailBus networks are planned for internal areas of communities like Karama, Al Barsha, and Deira, which are not yet connected to the Metro. These areas, often characterized by tight corridors and dense populations, pose challenges for extending the current Metro and Tram lines. RailBus offers a cost-effective and efficient alternative, bridging this gap in public transportation.
The RailBus system will operate on a separate, dedicated rail network within each community. The spacious vehicles are designed to accommodate both seated and standing passengers, providing comfortable transportation within neighborhoods. Passengers will be picked up from strategically located stops within their communities and transported to the nearest Metro station or Tram stop, facilitating seamless transfers to Dubai's wider public transportation network.
Another key feature of the RailBus is its quiet operation. Mishmish emphasized that the vehicles are designed to minimize noise pollution, a significant benefit for residential communities where the RailBus will operate. This focus on noise reduction underscores the RTA's commitment to creating a comfortable and environmentally friendly transportation system.
The RTA is currently focused on conducting technical and feasibility studies for the RailBus project, with a target completion timeframe of two to three years. These studies will assess the technical aspects of implementing the RailBus network, including route planning, station locations, and vehicle specifications. The feasibility studies will evaluate the economic and operational viability of the project, ensuring its long-term success.
Mishmish highlighted the rationale behind the RailBus concept, explaining that it combines the features of a rail system with the convenience of a bus. This hybrid approach is designed to meet the specific transportation needs of Dubai's residents, providing a convenient and efficient way to reach their destinations, particularly in areas where traditional rail infrastructure is not yet feasible. RailBus aims to improve accessibility and connectivity within communities, enhancing the overall public transportation experience in Dubai.
Similar to the Dubai Metro and Dubai Tram, the RailBus system will be driverless, operating autonomously. This not only increases efficiency but also reduces operational costs. Mishmish pointed out that RailBus is a more cost-effective solution compared to building new Metro or Tram lines, making it a financially viable option for expanding public transportation access to underserved communities. The use of solar power for the RailBus system further emphasizes Dubai's commitment to sustainable transportation solutions. By combining autonomous operation with solar energy, the RailBus aims to provide an environmentally friendly and efficient way to move people within the city.
